Akasofu Gyokko

Silvered Bronze Okimono of a Goshawk

Description

This impressive Meiji-period okimono depicts a goshawk (Accipiter gentilis) perched on a gnarled tree trunk, by Akasofu Gyokko and signed Gyokko saku (玉光作) beneath the bird’s belly. Cast and carved from silvered bronze, the sculpture features finely incised plumage for lifelike detail, with the beak, eyes, and talons highlighted in gold and shakudō. The hawk’s alert posture and naturalistic rendering reflect the technical mastery and artistic ambition of Meiji metalwork.
The wooden base, displaying natural imperfections and age cracks, complements the dynamic presence of the bird.
