In 1924 – 1925 French artist Alexandre Jacovleff took part in an expedition to the Sahara desert and Equatorial Africa, organized by Citroën and headed by the engineers L. Audoin-Dubreuil and G. M. Haardt. There Jacovleff, an artist with exceptional powers of observation, produced a large number of paintings and drawings that had a lot of success in France. As a result Jacovleff was awarded the Legion of Honor by the French government in 1926.
