Albrecht Dürer

The Four Angels Holding the Winds, from The Apocalypse, 1511

Description

The woodcut is listed as Bartsch: 66, Medes: 169.

The Durer’s woodcut is following the Revelation. The apostle John saw in vision the “four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, on the sea, or on any tree” (Revelation 7:1). The “four corners” represent the whole earth and the “four winds” represent the four directions of the compass.
