Myochin Munehisa

62-Plate Tetsusabiji Suji Bachi Kabuto

Description

A fine iron russet suji kabuto (ridge helmet) featuring a 62-plate bowl, signed by the renowned Myochin Munehisa. The suji kabuto form is enhanced by a dramatic arrangement of shinodare gold plates—five at the front, four at the back, and three at the sides—typifying the rare 4-houjiro mounting. The kabuto’s bowl (kabutobachi), dating to the Muromachi period, displays a rich iron texture with original signature beneath the crown.

Later restoration in the Meiji period (19th century) incorporates shikoro (neck guard), kuwagata (horns), maedate (forecrest), and mabizashi (visor), all finely crafted. The shikoro is lacquered black honkozane leather and strung in green, white, and red, a tri-color “iroioodoshi” pattern. The fukigaeshi (turnbacks) feature chrysanthemum motif metalwork, a symbol of tradition rather than family crest. The kuwagatadai is adorned with openwork carved chrysanthemum branches, and the maedate is a wood dragon, gold lacquered and boldly carved.
