Juan CORREA DE VIVAR
(Mascaraque, 1510 – 1566, San Miguel)
Arrest of Christ
1530-1539
Oil on panel, 92.5 x 77 cm
Juan Correa de Vivar, born in 1510 in Baeza, Spain, was a prominent Spanish Renaissance painter. Although details about his early education are limited, it is known he studied in Burgundy and his work reflects a solid understanding of Renaissance artistic principles.
Correa de Vivar was influenced by renowned Renaissance artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, and Michelangelo. He incorporated elements from their work into his own, including attention to detail, compositional harmony, and the portrayal of the human form.
Primarily focusing on religious themes, Correa de Vivar’s paintings depicted scenes from the life of Christ, the Virgin Mary, and various saints. His works were known for their spiritual depth, technical skill, and use of color and light to create a luminous effect.
This exceptional and well-preserved work was painted by Correa da Vivar towards the 1530s, soon after he left the workshop of Juan de Borgoña. “The Arrest of Christ” was probably one of the missing panels from the altarpiece depicting scenes from the life of Christ.
